UNITY BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY

On Wednesday, September 21, 1983 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Greer on 112 Claxton Drive, Greenville, South Carolina, Pastor C. Wayne Ballard shared his vision of Unity Baptist Church. He got our church name from Psalm 133:1 – “Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” Pastor Ballard conducted this prayer meeting, and 23 were in attendance.

On Wednesday, September 28, 1983 an organizational service was held at the home of Pastor & Mrs. C. Wayne Ballard. On this day we were duly and legally constituted as an Independent Baptist Church. There was an attendance of 27 with 22 joining our church.

On Sunday, October 2, 1983 we had our first Sunday morning worship service at Berea Elementary School with an attendance of 45. It was a beautiful, sunny Lord’s day together in unity as a church!

On Sunday, October 16, 1983 we had our first Sunday worship service at the Hallmark Shopping Center located at 6800 White Horse Road. We had an attendance of 58 for the morning service. We continued to worship as a church at this location until September 16, 1987.

On Wednesday, September 16, 1987 we had our first service at our new church on 12 Piney Road, Greenville, South Carolina. In October, 1994 our new Fellowship Building was completed with a kitchen, fellowship room, gymnasium, and eight Sunday School classes. The Lord has really blessed Unity Baptist Church!

Our founding Pastor, C. Wayne Ballard, began his full-time  ministry here on April 1, 1984. After a brief illness, the Lord called him home on April 24, 2001. He was 49 years old.

In 2002 Pastor James (Jim) Brooks was called as Pastor of Unity Baptist Church. He faithfully served our church until November, 2003.

In December, 2003, Pastor James Earl Green was called to Unity Baptist Church as our Interim Pastor with a 100% vote. On May 2, 2004 he was voted in as our full-time Pastor with a 100% vote. We praise the Lord for he and his wife, Marcia, and look forward to all the great and mighty things that the Lord will continue to do under his ministry here at Unity Baptist Church.
